| Artist: Walter Baumhofer (1904-1987) Description: Pilot discovered by natives at scene of downed plane. Caption: “Bannerman leaped from the plane in a frenzy of anger…” Publication information: Story illustration for “Bushman Tattoo” by Edward Ernest Smith, writing as Edward Lindall, appearing in Argosy magazine of July 1953. Medium: Oil on stretched canvas Size: 22 x 32” (image), stretched to 25 x 36” Signature: signed lower left. Condition: Good, not framed. Comment: Acknowledged as The King of the Pulps for his strong cover designs, in this particular piece Baumhofer concentrates more on storytelling than in the typically iconic covers. Beyond his evolution as an artist, this piece underlines the fact that by the early 1950s, the pulps as a genre were fading fast even while using name illustrators increasingly for interior spreads.
