Artist: George Price (1901-1995)

Description: Man snoozing in front of full service filling station, women at window commenting.

Caption: “At least you have to give him credit for trying”

Publication information: Gag cartoon for The New Yorker, published on June 28th, 1952.

Literature: “The Complete Cartoons of The New Yorker”.

Medium: Pen and ink

Size: 16 x 20”

Signature: Signed lower right.

Condition: The signature is executed on a separate scrap of paper. That scrap had become yellowed from adhesive residue over the years. It has since been professionally treated to match the tone of the full sheet. Matted, not framed.

Comment: A very fine example of the masterful line and offbeat sense of humor of the longtime New Yorker mainstay. Price's cartoons often focus on familial relationships and, as is often the case it's the comparison of the caption and the action that bring a smile to our faces.

Price: SOLD
