  Artist: Walter M. Baumhofer (1904-1987)

Description: Captured spy brought before Japanese army officer.

Publication information: Illustration for a story, apparently, entitled “Spies Should Start in Kindergarten” appearing in This Week magazine ca. 1955.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size: 18.5 x 26.25” image, overall stretched canvas size of 22.5 x 29”

Signature: signed lower left.

Condition: Would benefit from a light cleaning. Very good condition, not framed

Comment: As Baumhofer made the transition from pulp covers to the slicks (and not-so-slick in the case of This Week) he had to adjust his method of story-telling. His ability to convey the gist of a story relied more and more the use of facial expression and small details and less through pulse-quickening action.

Price: $2,100
