Comment: A letter from the artist: The CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON painting was created in 2004 for the 50th Anniversary of the film’s release (Universal-International, 1954), and was intended for use as a program book cover for the first Monster Mania Convention in New Jersey, and for a limited edition print to be signed by Ben Chapman (the "land" Creature in the original film) and Julie Adams (who played "Kate Lawrence" in the film). Soon after the art was created, it went on a two-year national tour of shows through the Society of Illustrators for Murray Tinkelman's "Favorite Flicks" show. The painting has since gone on to win several best of show awards, including the Rondo Award for best horror cover art of 2004.

While the painting was on tour, it was selected for the SPECTRUM show at the Society.  The scheduling of Spectrum created a conflict with the art's availability. The Society's policy has always been to exhibit only original art, so I had to recreate the painting, or not exhibit it at all.  Thus, I created, for the only time in my life, a fairly faithful copy of the original painting, which is what this painting is.  I have no intention of ever doing another one, and I have NO intention, entirely for sentimental reasons, of EVER selling the "original" painting.

I hope this mini-history of the piece will be of some help.-Vin

Price: $16,500.
