Artist: Pruett Carter (1891-1955)

Description: Elegant couple in interior.

Caption: [not readily known]

Publication information: Story illustration for The Wise Shepherdess, published in McCalls magazine, ca. 1930.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size: 38 x 28”

Signature: signed and indistinctly dated lower left.

Condition: Several small, scattered areas of professional inpainting, the largest being on the man’s right cheek. Good; widespread crackling which is consistent with a large canvas of this age. Nicely framed. While a relining of the piece would help flatten the crackling, the piece shows well and would make a good addition to any notable collection of American illustration.

Comment: Those of you who didn’t read my profile of the artist in Step-By-Step Graphics in early 1996 should be interested to read Carter’s thoughts on the function of the illustrator. He said: “Actually, the illustrator may be likened to the director of a motion picture or spoken-stage play. He must know his characters—their emotions and desires—he must set the stage, and direct the arrangement and action and conflict and drama. He must live the part of each actor. He must do the scenery, design the costumes, and handle the lighting effects. His illustration must be deeper than a poster—for he must make his characters live and breathe and react to each other—as the author intended.”

It was Carter’s ability to portray character and emotion that distinguishes his best work… including this example.
