| Artist: Cecil Calvert Beall (1892-1967) Description: Peasant widow slicing bread for hungry American soldier. Publication information: Likely for a Collier’s story, though exact particulars are not known at present. Medium: watercolor on illustration board Size: 23.5 x 17.75” Signature: Signed lower left. Condition: A couple scattered minor inpaints, overall good. Beall was in the habit of applying a light coat of varnish to his watercolors and this example is no exception. That said, unlike in some other subjects, the slight yellowish cast of the picture just adds a heightened mood to the composition. Tastefully, though not spectacularly framed. . Comment: Pound for pound, Beall was one of the most “realistic” of the watercolor illustrators of his day. A prolific artist who was a frequent contributor to Collier’s, Beall’s impact was such that President Truman chose Beall’s recording of the event as the official painting of the Axis’ surrender aboard the USS Missouri.
