Description: Woman enjoying the pleasures of a drink and a smoke. Publication information: Apparently unpublished, but most likely created for Argosy All-Story Weekly, from the 1921-1927 period. Medium: Oil on board Size: 14 x 14” Signature: signed lower left. Condition: Good. A small dent and loss at edge in upper right. The signature appeared to have been cropped somewhat in the lower left. Light surface dirt, framed. Comment: Hiller is known to have created covers for Argosy All-Story Weekly. Beyond a search for the magazine which came up empty, further evidence of it’s not having been published comes in the fact that there is lettering in the top portion of the composition, reading: Absinthe by Edgar Franklin. Franklin, a pen name of Edgar Franklin Stearns, wrote prolifically and for a variety of publications. I’ve found no record of a Franklin story by this title. Price: SOLD |
