Description: Portly man bound and gagged by captor Caption: “Gentleman Joe neither answered that look, nor stopped to explain” Publication information: Story illustration for “The Acid Test” by Arthur Stringer. Published in The Saturday Evening Post of February 8th, 1913. Medium: Oil on board, primarily en grisaille. Size: 22 x 17” Signature: Initialed lower left Condition: Please see the attached detail images. The piece was in an earthquake some years ago. The current owner had restoration work done on it, which essentially amounted to repairing of cracks in the board and inpainting where necessary. Comment: Arthurs works are increasingly difficult to acquire… in part because many did not survive his lifetime, but also because of the appreciation of his talents as one of Howard Pyle’s top students.
