  Artist: Walter M. Baumhofer (1904-1987)

Description: Two lion hunting images.

Caption: “Incredibly fast, the charging lion comes in low. A hunter must aim low in the chest to kill him” and “Wanting the topi all to himself, the huge male drove away all of the pride except two unmindful cubs”

Publication information: Both for the story “The Lion” by Jack O’Connor appearing in Outdoor Life in February, 1964.

Medium: Ink, drybrush, lithopencil and watercolor

Size: 7 x 14.25” and 8 x 24”

Signature: first signed lower right, second initialed lower right

Condition: Very good, a bit of tape residue well outside of the image areas, neither framed

Comment: However one feels about big game hunting, there’s no denying Baumhofer’s abilities. For many years the artist was a mainstay with the magazine, covering all types of outdoors, fishing and hunting subjects. WMB's file copies of the tearsheets are included.
