Description: Beautiful pensive young woman Caption: not readily known Publication information: Quite possibly a poem illustration for the book: Poems by Dobson, Locker and Praed, published by W.A. Stokes in 1892. The book is a scarce one and I don't have access to a copy of it. Medium: watercolor Size: 9.25 x 7.25” (oval) Signature: Signed and dated lower right Condition: Very good, nicely presented in an ornate frame with double matting. Comment: A very delicate and sweet picture... the crescent moon on the subject's forehead and the star next to her left eye give this an allegorical feeling and appropriate for a poem illustration, as is supposed. I know that the fad to applied birthmarks lasted for a time, but can't recall seeing an image of a woman using two of them simultaneously. If someone reading this can correct me, please do.
