Description: Portrait of Native American chief.
Comment: Unlike a lot of western art and historical art more generally which tends to over-glorify the landscape, the people and the scenery... too often all at once... Hargens has taken a straightforward, almost deceptively simple, approach to the recording of Little Sioux. It's not over-glamorized, nor buried in a fascination with excessive detail. It is a straightforward portrait and that's what makes it great. Note on artist's letterhead, affixed to verso identifies this as “Little Sioux/ A Sioux Indian chief from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation Wounded Knee, South Dakota.”/ Done from a drawing made of the chief, 1960.”
