Provenance: This is consigned by someone who received the painting as a gift from their father almost sixty years ago… the father bought it at a church charity sale (Aquia Church in Stafford, Virginia) though just when that would have happened is open to speculation. The church “is one of the oldest active colonial churches still in operation in America today...”
Comment: I'd venture to say that most people familiar with Stoops' work know the covers and the powerful brush and ink work that he did for Blue Book magazine. Before Stoops became so readily associated with the depiction of adventurous stories in far-off locales, he cut his teeth on the more general interest stories that were the stock and trade of illustrators generally. Here's a nice example now… and painted corner to corner and edge to edge, this type of picture is, in that way, relatively more unusual to find that the vignettes.
