Humphrey, Maud

Price: $950.00

Description: Beautiful pensive young woman

Comment: A very delicate and sweet picture... the crescent moon on the subject's forehead and the star next to her left eye give this an allegorical feeling and appropriate for a poem illustration, as is supposed. I know that the fad to applied birthmarks lasted for a time, but can't recall seeing an image of a woman using two of them simultaneously. If someone reading this can correct me, please do.

Artist Maud Humphrey (1865-1940)
Caption not readily known
Condition Very good, nicely presented in an ornate frame with double matting.
Medium watercolor
Publication Information Quite possibly a poem illustration for the book: Poems by Dobson, Locker and Praed, published by W.A. Stokes in 1892. The book is a scarce one and I don't have access to a copy of it. I recently heard from a reader who tells me that this image does NOT appear in the book. The woman is clearly the same though, so perhaps it was used to advertise the book itself.
